Extension of free ration scheme and other key Cabinet decisions | India News

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday took a couple of major decisions, including revision of pension for armed forces and extension of free ration scheme for 81.35 crore poor people for a year.
Here are the key decisions taken by the Union cabinet on the day:
Revision of pension for armed forces
The Union Cabinet has approved revision of pension for armed forces under One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme with effcet from July 1, 2019. Pension of the past pensioners would be re-fixed on the basis of average of minimum and maximum pension of defence forces retirees of calendar year 2018 in the same rank with the same length of service.

Free ration to 81.35 crore poor people
In another major decision, the government on Friday decided to provide free ration to 81.35 crore poor people under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) for a year. Under the food law, the government currently provides 5 kg food grains per person per month at Rs 2-3 per kg. Rice is given to poor persons under NFSA at Rs 3 per kg while wheat at Rs 2 per kg. The families covered under Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) get 35 kg food grains per month.

Food Minister Piyush Goyal said the Centre will bear the entire burden of providing free food grains under the NFSA. The annual cost to the exchequer is estimated at Rs 2 lakh crore.
Cabinet approves MSPs for copra for 2023 season
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for copra for 2023 season, based on recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices and views of major coconut growing states.
The MSP for Fair Average Quality of milling copra has been fixed at Rs 10,860 per quintal and for ball copra at Rs 11,750 per quintal for 2023 season. This is an increase of Rs 270 per quintal for milling copra and Rs 750 per quintal for ball copra over the previous season.
