NAGPUR: The Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis government on Friday ordered an inquiry by the state intelligence department (SID) into allegations that MVA CM Uddhav Thackeray had tried to suppress the Umesh Kolhe murder case in Amravati. This is the third inquiry/probe ordered against the Thackerays by the government.
Pharmacist Umesh Kolhe was stabbed to death while returning home on his scooter after closing his medical store in Amravati in June. Investigators said he was targeted for posts in favour of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s controversial statements about the Prophet.
The announcement came during discussions on a calling attention motion over a religious conversion case in Shrirampur taluka of Ahmednagar. Legislator Ravi Rana raised the issue, demanding an inquiry into the alleged suppression of the Kolhe case, terming it a “robbery”. State excise minister Shambhuraj Desai said the state would ask for a report from SID. The next course of action would be based on the report and in consultation with deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the home portfolio.
Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) spokesperson Harshal Pradhan described the move as politically motivated. “It’s an effort to heap miseries on the Thackeray family. Those who are doing this are puppets in the hands of people at the helm,” he said.
On the Ahmednagar conversion case, Desai said besides arresting the accused, the police officer allegedly shielding those indulging in conversion has been transferred and is being probed.
After Kolhe’s murder, the police arrested seven men, including prime accused Irfan Khan. All of them were charged under the stringent anti-terror law, besides IPC sections. On December 16, the NIA filed a chargesheet against 11 accused in the case.
On June 21, CCTV footage showed the assailants following Kolhe at 10pm. Kolhe’s son and wife were accompanying him on another scooter when the attack took place. Kolhe was taken to a hospital but died while receiving treatment.
