Despite the availability of luxury vehicles during his tenure, he maintained a personal attachment to his humble Maruti 800.
Maruti 800: A Symbol of Simplicity
The Maruti 800, an iconic compact car in India, was Dr. Singh’s personal vehicle. Even during his time as Prime Minister, he expressed a preference for this modest car over the more luxurious and secure options provided for official duties. Asim Arun, a former Special Protection Group (SPG) officer who served as Dr. Singh’s bodyguard, recalled that Dr. Singh often remarked, “I don’t like travelling in this (BMW) my vehicle is this one [the Maruti].”
Official Vehicles During Tenure
During his tenure as Prime Minister, Dr. Singh used official vehicles equipped with advanced security features, as mandated by the SPG. The official fleet included armored BMW 7 Series sedans, which became the designated vehicles for Indian Prime Ministers following heightened security concerns after the 2001 Parliament attacks.
Despite the availability of these luxury vehicles, Dr. Singh’s personal preference remained with his Maruti 800, symbolizing his connection with the common man and his commitment to a modest lifestyle.
